![]() ![]() I've tried everything else (short of an electric pump). Even though the PO never complained about any heat related, fuel problems to me, I figured what the heck, let me give that a try. This was the way the car was when I bought it, so I assumed that was proper, original from the factory. Then one day I noticed that a section of the hard fuel line pipe between the filter and the pump was actually bolted to the back of the bell hosing. I replaced everything between the carburetor and the fuel tank, and then I even replaced the tank too! Each time the "intermittent" problem eventually came back. Each time I replaced something I thought, "that was it!" for a while. I knew it was definitely fuel and heat related. I experienced all the same problems and troubleshooting steps. Same car, (76 Midget), same problem, but much different fix! Easier and cheaper too! ![]() Thank you for the follow up as I am hoping to get up early tomorrow and take her for a test drive and see how she does. Both times it died on me I drove it about 30 minutes and it died within a quarter of a mile each other each time, and it died right after I made a hard turn, so I am hoping that I was pulling a vacuum and it was the tank vent. I am guessing (and hoping) that my true problem is that my tank was never vented. I do have an electric fuel pump in the back of the car, but the other day I started checking all the lines and discovered that although the vent line was properly piped from my tank to expansion system to my rebuilt carbon cannister, that the vent line itself was indeed obstructed (probably rust in the steel line). Michael - I have followed your thread in the past as I too have seen that you and I have had the same problems. I don't think it is a lumenation system - thanks for the advice though as I need all I can get. Hi Dave - I still have the original distibutor and electronic ignition, which seems to be OK. I am moving the fuel through the original fuel lines and then through a small filter in the engine compartment just prior to the carb. FWIW I also have an electric fuel pump mounted in the rear and it seems to not be the culprit but I am open to all ideas. Is there a chance I think I have a vapor lock issue but instead my coil is cutting out on me? Overall it has been a pretty predictable car but this cutout issue has me a bit spooked to drive it. It happened about a week ago and this time I put my hand on the coil and the coil was super hot, so hot I could not keep my hand on it. If I wait about 30 minutes it will start right back up. In the past I figured that the gas was boiling in the carb since it sits above the exhaust manifold, so I fabricated a heat shield and thought that would do the trick (I am sure it could be a better heat shield.). I pop the hood and although the engine temperature is never a problem (180F on a new temp gauge, probably have 20 to 30% antifreeze in the radiator, mostly water)the engine compartment itself is always super hot, and when I put my hand on the carb (dreaded zenith stromberg but again seems to be in good shape)it is so hot on the top it will burn your hand. No sputter or anything, just turns right off. Twice it has just cut out on me and I have drifted to the side of the road. I have a 76 midget 1500 which always starts without an issue and seems to operate without an issue unless I have been driving it at 50 mph or so for about 30 minutes.
